Acting Early on Malaysia’s Overlooked Climate-Energy Risks

Date

12 August 2025

How climate pressures — data centres straining water and power, rising seas threatening coastal energy and oil infrastructure — are reshaping the case for a renewables-led energy transition in Malaysia.

About the Campaign

Key issues for discussion:

1. The Thirst and Hunger of Data Centres Rapid growth in AI and data infrastructure is increasing water and energy demands. With many global ICT firms’ net-zero pledges lacking water-risk considerations, Malaysia must act early, through smart siting, water-risk assessments, and low-water, renewables-powered technologies.

2. Coastal Power Infrastructure at Risk Rising seas put Malaysia’s power plants, substations, and coastal grids in danger. How can we integrate future climate scenarios into today’s energy planning?

3. Oil Infrastructure and Trade Vulnerability As a major fossil fuel importer, Malaysia is exposed to risks from rising seas threatening oil ports and trade routes. What would a more secure, renewables-led energy transition look like?
